“To blanketly tap every phone seems to me an invasion of privacy,” said Bruce Winick, a law professor at the University of Miami. “Why should we punish everyone in jail by interfering with privacy of communications?”
Many people in jail are presumed innocent awaiting trial but can’t post bond because they are poor, Winick said. They shouldn’t be deprived of the right to speak freely to their loved ones and relatives, he said.
Law enforcement officials should obtain warrants before taping conversations, Winick said.
